10 Confessions of a Gymbunny

I’m a self confessed gymbunny because I aim to go to the gym daily and I bloody love it. Even when I’m away from my home gym I hunt down the closest chain and pop in after a days work. So here a few things I’ve picked up after almost half a year of enjoying a healthier lifestyle.

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny1) Gymbunnies sweat – so you gotta wash everything more reguarly. This includes your hair! All that talk about stripping your hair of its natural oils go out the window. When you work out you sweat from every pore, even more so from your scalp because of all of that hair. So avoid the hairline pimples and give it a clean!

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny exercise workout fun motivation self help top tips lifestyle rinniboo love health healthy blog blogger lblogger manchester gym2) You need two yoga mats – the gym floors tend to be super hard being solid floorboards, so double up your yoga mat. It gets uncomfortable real quick if your rolling on your back in Pilates or holding poses that put a lot of pressure on your knees/arm joints, so a little extra padding goes a long way. You can concentrate more on the routine at hand than the pain going through your knees during a Sun Salutation.

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny exercise workout fun motivation self help top tips lifestyle rinniboo love health healthy blog blogger lblogger manchester gym3) Always have a hair tie handy – There’s nothing chic about sweaty hair for a gymbunny! I throw a few extras in my gym bag for the days I forget, but a large hair clip doesn’t quite do it when you’re jumping around. I normally use a huge clamp clip to avoid the kinks when I whack my hair back, but it doesnt hold your hair when you’re doing a stint of cardio or hanging onto the barre in body barre.

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny exercise workout fun motivation self help top tips lifestyle rinniboo love health healthy blog blogger lblogger manchester gym4) Keep the flip flops handy – the thought of walking around barefoot around the pool and shower areas grosses me out, so reduce your chances of getting a varruca and keep a pair of flip flops handy. I wear mine and leave them with my towel by the pool when I fancy a swim.

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny exercise workout fun motivation self help top tips lifestyle rinniboo love health healthy blog blogger lblogger manchester gym5) You probably need to take a step further back for lunges – I started off quite meek with my strides for my lunges and realised I wasn’t working the right muscles and just putting pressure on my knees. So now I always keep a check on my form and take a bigger stride. If they’re not at 90 deg when you bend down, you’re not doing it right!

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny exercise workout fun motivation self help top tips lifestyle rinniboo love health healthy blog blogger lblogger manchester gym6) If it hurts, stop – a work out should be challenging and tiring, not painful in the sense that you’re hurting. That means you could be doing something wrong or you need to take it easy. Tune in with how your body is before you start a workout, are your joints feeling okay today? If not take it easy, you don’t want to aggravate an injury.

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny exercise workout fun motivation self help top tips lifestyle rinniboo love health healthy blog blogger lblogger manchester gym7) It’s okay to miss a day – motivation is hard at first but you need to make it easier for yourself to love the gym in the first place, check out my last gym post for a pep talk here. If I’m not feeling it one day because a favourite class isn’t on that day and the thought of running brings tears to my eyes, I just say I’ll take that day off. Simple as! There’s always another class I can choose to go to the next day thankfully.

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny exercise workout fun motivation self help top tips lifestyle rinniboo love health healthy blog blogger lblogger manchester gym8) But don’t be a lazy gymbunny – take a rest when you need one, but don’t make excuses. If you’re down and out with the flu then recover before you smash it at the gym again!

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny exercise workout fun motivation self help top tips lifestyle rinniboo love health healthy blog blogger lblogger manchester gym9) Cheat your brain into running for longer – when I’ve missed the cardio classes for the week I’d have to bribe myself to have a quick run by watching a Youtube video. Distracting your attention from just starting at the gym wall  when you run will make you focus less on how boring it is and make you more likely to run for a little bit longer.

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny exercise workout fun motivation self help top tips lifestyle rinniboo love health healthy blog blogger lblogger manchester gym10) Have fun – another way of gathering some motivation to hit the gym is to enjoy your workouts. Everyone has their own little fun bits in the day so make it yours!

I also tried to subtly get that Easter bunny in there, could you tell??

Let your inner gymbunny shine!

What they don’t tell you about the gym – 10 fun facts

Okay so the gym themselves aren’t lying, they’re pretty transparent. You just need to do your research before hand and quiz them before you join! It helps to be in the know of all the deals they have done previously, as joining mid-month in a quiet period can work out a lot cheaper.

Find out why I’m taking a more relaxed approach to fitness in my ‘A Flat stomach in three weeks?!‘ blog.

So I have joined Nuffield Health recently and I’m on a bit of a health kick. Turns out my metabolism still has it! Here’s a few things you find out after using it for the first time.

fun facts about the gym fitness blogger lifestyle Nuffield Health review funny womens health

10 Fun facts

  1. Your fanny will hurt after the first few times at spin class – Unfortunately, the seats don’t fit like a glove and rub in all sorts of places! But you get used to it after a few classes, just push through it!
  2. Personal trainers aren’t actually that scary – they want you to be healthier and look to encourage you!
  3. The huge tyre is heavier than it looks – it’s 60kg! I was almost moving something twice the weight of myself!
  4. The old grannies that go to step class aren’t frail – not one bit! In fact, they’d probably kick your ass! So don’t tick them off!
  5. You don’t need a protein shake – body builders will tell you that all that whey protein was a huge fad. You don’t need supplements as long as you’re getting the right amount of protein in your diet.

Just abs of steel or trained assassin?
  6. The gym equipment is pretty gross – everyones pretty lazy and can’t move after a full on workout. So the gym equipment probably has the sweat of everyone before you on it. Thankfully there’s readily available cleaning products handy to clean them. Yes, I did get a smelly mat that smelt like cheesy feet!
  7. Big contracts don’t necessarily mean expensive – if you use the gym everyday it works out about £1-2 a day! Even then you get full use of all the facilities i.e. hello sauna and jacuzzi!
  8. Classes are actually a lot of fun – starting out can be a little daunting being the new person, but as with everything practise makes perfect!
  9. Gym wear is more important than it seems – it won’t just be aesthetically pleasing to motivate you more, but having sweat wicked away and the right sports bra makes a difference! Look good AND feel good whilst working out! How to chose your sports bra blog post coming next tuesday, follow us on social media to be notified
  10. You will feel a lot better – you’re less tired and have more of a drive to do things. Teamed with a healthy diet, you’ll have energy for days!

But the gym is a fun way to stay healthy

So that’s a fun few facts for you after my first month in the gym, and my new shopping obsession is funky gear that’ll make my work outs a lot more chic! After trying out most of the classes so far I do enjoy the united feel, having peers not only motivate you but also challenge you in ways you least expect! I have always liked classes from my various dance classes from a young age, so when they started getting labelled ‘adult classes’. I bolted. No one clinging to their youth wants to admit they’re adults! So gym classes has filled that void for now. I haven’t quite gotten into solo training yet as it’s not quite my front, but I’m sure that will come in time after I pick up some routines!

What they don’t tell you about the gym – 10 fun facts

All about the menstrual cup – The winning cup?

So you’ve probably heard about the menstrual cup or Moon/Diva Cup and wondered what all the revolutionary fuss is about, here’s some facts and tips to help you decide whether or not it’s for you.

What is a menstrual cup?

A menstrual cup is a small silicon cup that you can use to collect your menstrual discharge and dispose of it discreetly. It is in the shape of a cone that fits snugly around the entrance of your vagina with an elongated ‘tail’ to help remove it easily. It has several ribs to keep it in place and small ‘breathing’ holes around the edge.

Why should I use it?

Some women prefer it to the tampon as it works out a lot cheaper at around £20 a year compared to £60+ for the combination of tampons and pads! It’s also a lot more eco friendly as you will be disposing a lot less products that are difficult or dangerous in landfill. It’s been well known that you can safely wear a menstrual cup for a little longer than a tampon because there are no fibres linked to toxic shock syndrome involved, just surgical grade silicon! Read more about toxic shock syndrome on the NHS website here. If you are used to using tampons you’re halfway there already, so it’s worth trying one out!

Where do I start?

You pick the correct size based on the size of your vagina, this mostly depends on whether you have birthed naturally or not recently. So if you haven’t popped one out, go for the small; if you have created life recently, go for the next size up! Mooncup has a simple guide here.

When you see it for the first time you may be a bit taken aback on the size of it, but don’t worry; your body does amazing things! You fold the cup up once or twice and insert it like you would with a tampon. However, unlike a tampon that you put as far up as you can, the menstrual cup sits close to the entrance. This may be a new experience that may take some time and practise, but practise makes perfect! There are some great tips here. It helps to fully insert it and then gently pull down to the entrance whilst contracting to create a secure seal.

All About the Menstrual Cup Diva Moon women's health tampon sustainable eco friendly save money discount savvy girls health sanitary

How do I take it out?

This again takes some getting used to and finding a way that works best for you. Some people find pushing the cup to one side to release the suction and then pulling it from the tail will remove it without spillage. It can then be emptied into the toilet and rinsed/cleaned before reinserting. You shouldn’t need with change it when you’re out and about unless you have an exceptionally heavy flow, in this case you can just empty it and reinsert it. Carrying hand sanitiser around might help to clean your hands before you exit the cubicle looking like a massacre!

Ultimately, keeping calm and practise is key. Panicking will make your muscles contract and make life more difficult. So if you find yourself in that position, stop and try again later. If you find that you’re leaking whilst using it, make sure you have a secure seal by checking the holes are clear and the rim is not folded. Pantyliners can be used for insurance or a pad for the first few cycles so you can master it!

Not for you? Don’t worry, it’s not for everyone. Check out the last post on a few easy ways of being more sustainable here to cancel out your carbon footprint and keep using tampons guilt free!

Why You Need Some ‘Me’ Time

So if you’ve ever been in a long term relationship or hanging out with anyone all the time. You need a little ‘me’ time to recuperate, and that’s okay!

Get comfortable with your relationship

If you’re not comfortable with all the ‘poop’ talk yet, then get on with it! You can’t hold that shit in (literally!) It’s bad for your body and you’ll be getting stomach aches for the most horrible of reasons. If your partner cares about you enough, they would want you to do it!

Why you need ‘me’ time

I call it ‘pamper time’. It’s the time that you take to do all your maintenance: Hair removal (from everywhere), Face masks, Hair masks, all of the above that takes longer than your usual daily routine. Taking a little breath to do this so you can relax and enjoy it, is when you can take a step out of your busy schedule to rejuvenate and THEN hop straight back into it. Having a moment to yourself is refreshing, as wearing yourself out from the daily grind can really affect your health. Overworking is a real thing! Have you read ‘How Heavy Is A Glass Of Water?‘ It puts into perspective that you need to take a break every now and again before you ‘pick up that glass of water’ again. Everyone will benefit from you being in a good mood after it!

Pamper yourself

How do you let them know you want a little time for yourself? Just tell them straight up! I prefer my friends being upfront with me. None of the long winded excuses or you’ll just put me off hanging out with you in the future. Can’t say it seriously? Make it into a joke! Have a chill. Your friends will love you for who you are, and taking a few hours out to be alone is perfectly fine. You might not realise it, but at least one of your friends has turned down a plan to have their own pamper!

Why You Need Some ‘Me’ Time

Life so far being twenty something

So I recently hit twenty four and now I’ve realised I have to stop being a student and scrimping all of the discounts, life isn’t too bad after all. This is what I’ve learnt so far…

life advice for twenty somethings

Don’t compare your life to others

If you really wanted to play that game then let me introduce you to the CEO of Snapchat who is on the list of the worlds youngest billionaires. Some people are just lucky, some worked their asses off, but ultimately they didn’t do it in a day, nor being unproductive and procrastinating. So get yourself out there and active with the community!

Start saving

Pay off your debts and start saving for a mortgage and your pension. The earlier you start the more money you’ll have to tap into when you retire. It seems a way off but if you think about it, just putting £1 away everyday can save up for many things! Struggle with budgeting? Download a budgeting app or do it the old fashioned way on pen and paper, there’s even printable booklets that you can DIY.

But get out of the country

If you’ve never left your door step, it’s the perfect time to go travelling. You may not feel the need to leave your bubble now, but get that travel bug out of the way whilst you can! Before you’re tied down with anything, take advantage of your freedom and spontaneity. Go and see sights that you think look amazing on the screen, actually being there in person always has a different effect that seeing it on a tiny screen.

Wear sunscreen

You always hear about it but the sun can damage the skin so badly, it doesn’t affect your tan and doesn’t hurt to slap a bit on before you head out of the house! Team it with a bottle of water in your bag for you to sip through out the day and your body will thank you for it!

Put yourself first

Never settle for the second best in anything, always try your best to work harder and even in terms of relationships. You’ll get to a point in your life when you realise you have to sift through your friend list and pick out the friends that you think are worth keeping in contact with. If there’s effort made on both ends, then you have a relationship worth keeping. Even romantic relationships, if you aren’t both seeing eye to eye with the priorities in your life then maybe it’s not the right time to be in a relationship. C’est la vie!

Go out there and get em!

London for the weekend and FREE Blueberry pancakes recipe

So my cousin from China has never made her own pancakes before so I thought I’d share how I like my pancakes in the morning!

Watch it on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/embed/xR_-icJeEu0

And she also has never been to London, so I had a bit of a tourist moment to show people around the world some of London.

Blueberry Pancakes recipe:

Serves 1-2 people

1/2 cup plain flour

1 egg

A punnet of blueberries and honey to serve

100ml milk (adjust as necessary for the consistency of your pancake)

Method:

  1. Beat the egg.
  2. Mix in the flour.
  3. Add the milk slowly to archive the consistency that you want. The thicker the consistency the thicker the pancakes, and the longer it will take to cook.
  4. Mix all of the ingredients well and then leave to combine for a few minutes.
  5. In a well oiled medium heat frying pan, use a ladle to proportion the pancakes and drop in some blueberries. Leave it to cook on one side.
  6. When the pancake is able to move/be peeled off, flip it over to cook the other side until equally toasted.
  7. Serve with blueberries and honey, bon appetite!

Great variations of this recipe is to replace the egg with a very ripe banana to make banana pancakes. To add a healthy kick, switch the plain flour for wholemeal plain flour!

So how do YOU like your pancakes?? Savoury or sweet? Have a weird combination/topping you like? Lets us know in the comments below!

How to grow beautiful and healthy nails naturally

Long nails create an elongated and elegant look to the hand, so it’s no wonder people would go to great lengths (pun intended) to archive this look. So here’s some tips and tricks to growing your own naturally long and luscious nails…

How to grow beautiful and healthy nails naturally
Forget spending all that money on fake nails that are ruining any chances of growing them out naturally. Get beautiful nails like mine!

Step 1 – STOP BITING YOUR NAILS!

I can’t stress how important this is, the gnawed nails look is NOT cute. It creates a jagged edge, and the more you nibble and chew the less chance your nails have to repair them! And if you keep going, you have a chance of damaging the nail bed which may cause your nails to deform as they grow. If you need to cut them, do so with a nail clipper; or even better a crystal nail file! So do everything you can to stop the bad habit and begin the journey to beautiful looking nails!

Painted naturally long nails look just as beautiful as artificial ones! They just feel less thick and more agile.

Step 2 – Moisturise

I’m guilty of this skipping this one. But if you tend to suffer from dry skin on your hands, it’s even more important that you keep them hydrated. Once you’ve washed your hands, apply a moisturiser straight away! Your skin will more susceptible of any moisturiser you apply to it right after you’ve washed it away. Massaging a moisturiser into your nails and cuticles too will benefit it.

I like to use coconut oil in between changing my nail colour to re-hydrate.

Step 3 – Care

It’s pretty hard if you work with your hands a lot, but being careful not to damage or break them helps! A great tip I have between painting your nails is to apply a thin layer of coconut oil to each nail to give it some pampering before applying a new colour. Nail varnish; especially nail polish remover, strips away any moisture from the nail, so rehydrating them this way will give them some strength back. And if you’re getting your hands wet, get some rubber gloves on! Getting the nails wet make them more prone to getting damaged, so buy some fluffy trim ones if you need to.

How to grow beautiful natural nails top tips painted naturally long nails manicure hands bracelet nails Korean trend fashion Step 4 – Protect

As you may have read in the previous step, nail varnish isn’t great for your nails. But it does create a hard protective layer over your nails so it can grow. After I have finished painting my nails I like to add a clear top coat to not only prolong the colour, but by extending it over the edge of the nail it will give it a little extra protection from any chips and nicks!
