10 Confessions of a Gymbunny

I’m a self confessed gymbunny because I aim to go to the gym daily and I bloody love it. Even when I’m away from my home gym I hunt down the closest chain and pop in after a days work. So here a few things I’ve picked up after almost half a year of enjoying a healthier lifestyle.

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny1) Gymbunnies sweat – so you gotta wash everything more reguarly. This includes your hair! All that talk about stripping your hair of its natural oils go out the window. When you work out you sweat from every pore, even more so from your scalp because of all of that hair. So avoid the hairline pimples and give it a clean!

It gets uncomfortable real quick if your rolling on your back in Pilates or holding poses that put a lot of pressure on your knees/arm joints, so a little extra padding goes a long way. You can concentrate more on the routine at hand than the pain going through your knees during a Sun Salutation.

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny exercise workout fun motivation self help top tips lifestyle rinniboo love health healthy blog blogger lblogger manchester gym3) Always have a hair tie handy – There’s nothing chic about sweaty hair for a gymbunny! I throw a few extras in my gym bag for the days I forget, but a large hair clip doesn’t quite do it when you’re jumping around. I normally use a huge clamp clip to avoid the kinks when I whack my hair back, but it doesnt hold your hair when you’re doing a stint of cardio or hanging onto the barre in body barre.

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny exercise workout fun motivation self help top tips lifestyle rinniboo love health healthy blog blogger lblogger manchester gym4) Keep the flip flops handy – the thought of walking around barefoot around the pool and shower areas grosses me out, so reduce your chances of getting a varruca and keep a pair of flip flops handy. I wear mine and leave them with my towel by the pool when I fancy a swim.

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny exercise workout fun motivation self help top tips lifestyle rinniboo love health healthy blog blogger lblogger manchester gym5) You probably need to take a step further back for lunges – I started off quite meek with my strides for my lunges and realised I wasn’t working the right muscles and just putting pressure on my knees. So now I always keep a check on my form and take a bigger stride. If they’re not at 90 deg when you bend down, you’re not doing it right!

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny exercise workout fun motivation self help top tips lifestyle rinniboo love health healthy blog blogger lblogger manchester gym6) If it hurts, stop – a work out should be challenging and tiring, not painful in the sense that you’re hurting. That means you could be doing something wrong or you need to take it easy. Tune in with how your body is before you start a workout, are your joints feeling okay today? If not take it easy, you don’t want to aggravate an injury.

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny exercise workout fun motivation self help top tips lifestyle rinniboo love health healthy blog blogger lblogger manchester gym7) It’s okay to miss a day – motivation is hard at first but you need to make it easier for yourself to love the gym in the first place, check out my last gym post for a pep talk here. If I’m not feeling it one day because a favourite class isn’t on that day and the thought of running brings tears to my eyes, I just say I’ll take that day off. Simple as! There’s always another class I can choose to go to the next day thankfully.

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny exercise workout fun motivation self help top tips lifestyle rinniboo love health healthy blog blogger lblogger manchester gym8) But don’t be a lazy gymbunny – take a rest when you need one, but don’t make excuses. If you’re down and out with the flu then recover before you smash it at the gym again!

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny exercise workout fun motivation self help top tips lifestyle rinniboo love health healthy blog blogger lblogger manchester gym9) Cheat your brain into running for longer – when I’ve missed the cardio classes for the week I’d have to bribe myself to have a quick run by watching a Youtube video. Distracting your attention from just starting at the gym wall  when you run will make you focus less on how boring it is and make you more likely to run for a little bit longer.

10 Confessions of a Gymbunny exercise workout fun motivation self help top tips lifestyle rinniboo love health healthy blog blogger lblogger manchester gym10) Have fun – another way of gathering some motivation to hit the gym is to enjoy your workouts. Everyone has their own little fun bits in the day so make it yours!

I also tried to subtly get that Easter bunny in there, could you tell??

Let your inner gymbunny shine!

What they don’t tell you about the gym – 10 fun facts

Okay so the gym themselves aren’t lying, they’re pretty transparent. You just need to do your research before hand and quiz them before you join! It helps to be in the know of all the deals they have done previously, as joining mid-month in a quiet period can work out a lot cheaper.

Find out why I’m taking a more relaxed approach to fitness in my ‘A Flat stomach in three weeks?!‘ blog.

So I have joined Nuffield Health recently and I’m on a bit of a health kick. Turns out my metabolism still has it! Here’s a few things you find out after using it for the first time.

fun facts about the gym fitness blogger lifestyle Nuffield Health review funny womens health

10 Fun facts

  1. Your fanny will hurt after the first few times at spin class – Unfortunately, the seats don’t fit like a glove and rub in all sorts of places! But you get used to it after a few classes, just push through it!
  2. Personal trainers aren’t actually that scary – they want you to be healthier and look to encourage you!
  3. The huge tyre is heavier than it looks – it’s 60kg! I was almost moving something twice the weight of myself!
  4. The old grannies that go to step class aren’t frail – not one bit! In fact, they’d probably kick your ass! So don’t tick them off!
  5. You don’t need a protein shake – body builders will tell you that all that whey protein was a huge fad. You don’t need supplements as long as you’re getting the right amount of protein in your diet.

Just abs of steel or trained assassin?
  6. The gym equipment is pretty gross – everyones pretty lazy and can’t move after a full on workout. So the gym equipment probably has the sweat of everyone before you on it. Thankfully there’s readily available cleaning products handy to clean them. Yes, I did get a smelly mat that smelt like cheesy feet!
  7. Big contracts don’t necessarily mean expensive – if you use the gym everyday it works out about £1-2 a day! Even then you get full use of all the facilities i.e. hello sauna and jacuzzi!
  8. Classes are actually a lot of fun – starting out can be a little daunting being the new person, but as with everything practise makes perfect!
  9. Gym wear is more important than it seems – it won’t just be aesthetically pleasing to motivate you more, but having sweat wicked away and the right sports bra makes a difference! Look good AND feel good whilst working out! How to chose your sports bra blog post coming next tuesday, follow us on social media to be notified
  10. You will feel a lot better – you’re less tired and have more of a drive to do things. Teamed with a healthy diet, you’ll have energy for days!

But the gym is a fun way to stay healthy

So that’s a fun few facts for you after my first month in the gym, and my new shopping obsession is funky gear that’ll make my work outs a lot more chic! After trying out most of the classes so far I do enjoy the united feel, having peers not only motivate you but also challenge you in ways you least expect! I have always liked classes from my various dance classes from a young age, so when they started getting labelled ‘adult classes’. I bolted. No one clinging to their youth wants to admit they’re adults! So gym classes has filled that void for now. I haven’t quite gotten into solo training yet as it’s not quite my front, but I’m sure that will come in time after I pick up some routines!

Check out the heath benefits of regular exercise in my last health blog here.

Happy gym bunny :o)

What they don’t tell you about the gym – 10 fun facts

Golf – not just for old men

Golf is still quite male dominated. In fact my first experience with golf etiquette was quite a lesson.

Golf is not just for guys, women can play too
Golf is not just for guys

It’s not exactly high fashion friendly. It’s quite the opposite. Similar to tennis; there’s a dress code of ‘no midriff’ or exposed back/navel region, no heels, and minimal accessories (you don’t want anything flying off in a swing). It’s strictly t-shirt and smart pants and suitable shoes, but shorts are permitted in the summer. But it’s a lot more fun learning to play than just watching!

Golf has been played since 1421 when it was first recorded in Scotland, it is now being played by men and women alike. The most popular tournament being the Masters, US and British Open and PGA Championship, played by Tigerwoods, Phil Mickelson, and Rory McIlroy. But since we’re empowering women in this blog, here’s the top 3 women golfers in the world; Annika SörenstamLorena Ochoa, and Jiyai Shin. Most of the top 10 being from Korea and Japan, surprising much?

So I’ve probably only been playing for a total of a few 30 hours or so, still practising my driving at the rage so I can actually hit the ball. Still bending the fashion rules. Guys have been playing to network and even progress in their career, so who says women can’t?

Grip is equally important. Glove from here.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

You don’t need to have all of the fancy gear to play, just a will to win and patience to play.

This girl can.

Golf – not just for old men

A flat stomach in a week?!

Ever seen an ad like this flashing around about the new food to eat or diet pill?  The question is, do they really work?

Slimming down is a lifestyle change and a long commitment. You can lose a lot of weight through various ways, but to keep it off you need to maintain the health and exercise.

If you find it hard to gather the motivation, hire a personal trainer to start you off. You pay them to keep you on the strict and narrow, fitness routines, and nutritional advice. Each trainer has their own ways of going about kick your ass into shape, so quiz them about it and see if it clicks.

“But personal trainers are expensive”

If you’re paying for a gym membership, work out how much of it you actually make use of. Are you better off getting a trainer? If you’re getting what you pay for then great! You’re already doing a good job so far, keep it up.

Motivation and wanting to progress also needs to come from YOU. You’re paying for a service, and you have to utilise that. Don’t think ‘only two more weeks of this diet and running, and I can sit back on the couch and eat 10 bars of chocolate’ Think ‘this is new beginnings’ of great health and the older you will thank you for it. You’ll soon stop craving the oversized portions of fast-food and sugars, and enjoy foods in smaller portions.

Realistic goals are key. You are not going to lose a stone in a week in a healthy way!

Ultimately, love what you do. Keeping fit and healthy should be something you enjoy. If that means keeping your exercise interesting by switching up your classes, then do it! Vice versa with food, there are a lot to try out there!

Eat happy!

Exercise – Extend your life, sleep better, and better skin?

Sound like your perfect anti ageing cream and miracle elixir all mixed into one? Well it’s easier to obtain than you think… EXERCISE!

We all hate it when there’s no motivation, but it’s more than just weight loss or a hobby. 10 mins of jogging or yoga a day really helps your body get the kick it needs to get going. I find that if I don’t have time to do a 30 min run and 40 min workout after it, I’ll do a quick 30 min exercise version; 10 min run around the block and a quick 20 min gentle workout to get my heart rate up.

Previously, I would have months where I will have nothing to do, and just sit around time after time. I really feel the benefits of getting up off my ass and getting the heart rate going. It helps with my sleep, mood and feeling overall better about my body. Team that with a healthy diet and I’m bopping about day-to-day!

So the next time you’re thinking you can’t be bothered to nip to the gym. Break it down and make it easier for yourself, so you’ll WANT to do something active; go local and have a quick jog just outside, or whack on a 20 min beginner yoga session on the laptop for a change, and I will guarantee you’ll feel a lot more relaxed after it.

Here’s some of my tried and tested favourites:

  • 20 min yoga for complete beginners here. – you don’t need anything fancy, just yourself.
  • 30 min Beginner yoga for back pain here. – great for the everyday bad posture causing back pain.
  • Need that motivational music going in the background? Download Spotify here. – easy ‘running’ playlists ready for you to hit play.
  • Going for a run? Get this app going first! Download Nike+ here. – see how far you’ve ran and how many calories you’ve burned.
  • And don’t forget to rehydrate throughout the day with a handy fruit infuser water bottle here. – forget the pressure of the 8 glass a day rule, just keep this topped up by your side!

Live, laugh and love.
